When Anxiety Makes You Feel Trapped in Your Own Mind

the story of a personal battle with anxiety and the steps that finally helped me break free ..

When Anxiety Makes You Feel Trapped in Your Own Mind

anxiety can feel like you’re stuck in a mental maze—one where every turn leads to another “what if,” every decision feels like a risk, and every moment of silence is filled with noise. i know this because i’ve been there.

there was a time when anxiety controlled so much of my life. i remember one day, sitting in my car, frozen. i was supposed to meet up with friends, but instead, i sat there overthinking every little thing: what if i say the wrong thing? what if i’m too awkward? what if they don’t really want me there?

as the minutes ticked by, i felt trapped in my own mind. my heart raced, my breathing was shallow, and i was stuck between wanting to show up and feeling like i just couldn’t. in the end, i drove home, angry at myself for not being “strong enough” to push through.

but here’s what i’ve learned since then: anxiety isn’t about weakness—it’s about patterns. and the good news is, patterns can be changed.

Why Anxiety Feels So Paralyzing

  1. The Overthinking Spiral:
anxiety convinces you that every thought needs to be analyzed, every decision needs to be perfect, and every mistake will lead to disaster. this constant overanalysis is exhausting and makes it hard to act.

  2. The Physical Toll:
anxiety isn’t just in your head—it’s in your body too. the racing heart, the tight chest, the shaky hands—all of it reinforces the feeling that you’re not in control.

  3. The Fear of Being Judged:
whether it’s social anxiety or fear of failure, anxiety makes you believe that others are constantly watching and critiquing your every move, even when they’re not.

How I Started to Break Free

that day in the car was a turning point for me. i realized i couldn’t keep letting anxiety dictate my life. here’s what helped me take back control:

1. Naming the Anxiety

one of the first steps i took was to name what i was feeling. instead of letting the fear spiral, i started saying to myself, “this is anxiety. it’s not me—it’s just a feeling.” this small shift helped me create space between my thoughts and my identity.

2. Learning to Breathe Again

deep breathing sounds simple, but it’s powerful. when anxiety hit, i started using a technique called box breathing: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, and hold again for 4 seconds. it didn’t fix everything, but it helped me calm down enough to think clearly.

3. Taking One Small Step

instead of trying to tackle everything at once, i focused on one small action. for example, instead of committing to a full night out with friends, i’d tell myself, “just show up for 10 minutes.” more often than not, those 10 minutes turned into an hour or more, but giving myself permission to leave took the pressure off.

4. Journaling the Wins

i started writing down every small victory: “i went to the store without panicking,” “i called a friend even though i was nervous,” “i spoke up in a meeting.” seeing those wins on paper reminded me that progress was possible, even if it was slow.

5. Being Kind to Myself

i used to beat myself up for every moment i let anxiety win. but over time, i learned to treat myself with compassion. instead of saying, “you’re so weak,” i started saying, “you’re doing your best, and that’s enough.”
